You can expect many years of enjoyment from all of your rugs with proper care and maintenance. First, make sure to vacuum your rugs a minimum of 1-2 times per week specially if placed in a heavy traffic area. Dirt acts as an abrasive, and therefore, it needs to be extracted on a regular basis.

Utilize Door Mats

Doormats play an important role in maintaining the cleanliness of your rugs. Using door mats before entering your house will aid in trapping excess soil, dirt, sand, dust, and other unnecessary filth that you may have acquired while going through your regular outdoor activities. Make sure, however, that your doormats are frequently cleaned as well to avoid being the causes of dirt themselves.

Prevent Direct Sunlight, and use Paddings

After prolonged exposure to bright direct sunlight, the dyes in you rugs may tend to fade. So it's a good idea to rotate the rug every few months to allow it to "mellow" evenly. Shade your rugs from direct sunlight by utilizing blinds, curtains and sunshades. To prevent wear and skidding, always use a "pad" beneath a rug for a better hold and better cushion.

Never shake out dirt

If you own antique or old rugs which haven't been vacuumed for many years it is recommended that you lower the roller of your vacuum cleaner as close to the rug as possible and vacuum its back, this will beat the dirt out of its foundation and will release them down to the floor.

Vacuming your Rugs

The process must be accomplished meticulously and as often as possible. This is especially true on areas with high activity. When walking on soiled rugs, the soil particles are further pushed down to the bottom of the rug thereby making them harder to clean, eventually damaging rug fibers.

Areas with light activity should be vacuumed 1-2 times a week for the traffic lanes, and once a week for the whole area. Areas with heavy activity should be vacuumed 2-3 times a week for the traffic lanes, and 1-2 times a week for the entire area.

Choose a high quality vacuum cleaner

Choose a vacuum cleaner that conforms to the highest standard of quality. A good vacuum cleaner works effectively in removing both surface and hidden dirt.

Vacuum cleaners need to be carefully chosen so they will match the type of rug you have. For ordinary rugs, choose vacuums with rotating brushes or combination beaters. Rugs with thick loop piles may use vacuum cleaners with suction only or those with adjustable brushes.

Monitor vacuum bags

Replaceable paper vacuum bags work better than cloth bags in terms of trapping small particles. Micro filtration bags or high efficiency vacuum bags are probably the best as they trap even the smaller microscopic particles. Continuous monitoring is necessary and replacement should be done when bags are half full.

Removing spots and spills on your rugs

• Scrape away as much food spills as possible using a dull knife or spoon.
• For wet spills, blot, do not rub, with clean, white absorbent cloth or paper towels to remove excess moisture. Press down firmly to remove as much moisture as possible. Repeat until no stain is evident on cloth or towels. Use a wet/dry vacuum if spill is large.
• If stain remains on rug, make a solution of warm water and mild non-bleach liquid laundry, not dishwashing, detergent (1 teaspoon to 1 quart water). Apply enough solution to cover stain and let soak for about 5 minutes.
• Soak up remaining moisture with layers of white towels. When completely dry, vacuum or brush the pile to restore texture.
